MICD and the Do IoT Fieldlab will soon have ‘the most intelligent bike path in the Netherlands’ constructed on the TU Delft campus. This strip, 25 m in length, is equipped with a comprehensive monitoring system (both above and underground). The data this produces will help road authorities to improve the design of our bicycle networks and achieve even smarter ways of managing bicycle traffic.
The intention is for sensors in, under and above the road surface to provide an anonymised yet razor-sharp picture of traffic flows on the cycle path. It should then be clear how many cyclists and scooters are driving, in what direction and at what speed. The weather is measured, there is visibility of crossing traffic and pedestrians in the immediate area, and ‘near misses’ are recorded.
The ingenious construction of the cycle path consists of separate elements made of recycled plastic. Because the plastic panels are not solid, this cycle path can also be used to store water, for example during heavy rainfall.

High tides have become increasingly common in the Netherlands in recent years. Therefore, we are developing an online tool to manage a safe and timely evacuation.
We are proud to announce that we are starting a long term collaboration with the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW). Together, RDW and TU Delft scientists, we will define several research topics, varying from data driven predictions to practical tests in our field lab.
Mobility Innovation Centre Delft is present at the Transport Research Arena (TRA) in Dublin. TRA, is the European transport event that covers all transport modes and all aspects of mobility. It is the largest European research and technology conference on transport and mobility.
A major challenge in crises is the combination of complexity, time pressure and moral decisions. AI has the potential to support crowd crises decisions, yet the increasing use of AI has led to a debate about the legal and ethical implications. To address these challenges, the AI-COMPASS consortium, led by TU Delft, develops real-time decision support systems, considering context, behaviour, and values. The project is financed by the Collaboration between Humans and (semi-)Autonomous systems programme of NWO.
This week marks the exciting start of the metaCCAZE Project, a groundbreaking initiative funded by HorizonEurope.
Traffic congestion, huge crowds, air pollution – mobility data can help solve problems of this kind. “But the more data Dutch government bodies and private parties have at their disposal, the more difficult it becomes to distil the right information from all those data sources,” says MICD director Sascha Hoogendoorn-Lanser.

Studies rarely stand alone. The DIT4TraM project is also part of a larger cluster: 4FRONT. A handy leaflet has now also been developed for this cluster.
