Intelligent bicycle path

The most intelligent bicycle path is on TU Delft Campus! MICD, TU Delft Campus and Plastic Road are testing an innovative underground sensor technique, integrated into the road surface over which cyclists and pedestrians move. By measuring the pressure of passers-by, it can be determined how many cyclists and pedestrians have passed a certain location and in which direction. In our pilot project, we will further investigate whether a distinction can be made between new forms of mobility such as scooters, mopeds, e-bikes and cargo bikes.

Besides sensors for monitoring cyclist and pedestrian flows, Plastic Road as a Smart Road also contains other types of sensors that are suitable for measuring the quality of the road surface, the amount of precipitation, temperature and iciness.

Two platforms connecting

MICD already had installed a powerful above-ground monitoring system for pedestrian and cycling flows. By allowing this platform and the Plastic Road top connect and communicate with each other, we are really working on the future of infrastructure. Roads that ‘understand’ how they are used, what kind of traffic passes through them, and can then communicate with other platforms, such as traffic lights, public lighting, dynamic signage, etc. In that way, we can make our cities smarter and more sustainable. All so that we can design and manage our cities in a smarter and more efficient way. A path like this has never been made or applied before.

Construction

The intelligent bycicle path was constructed in December 2021. The total length of the smart cycling path is 25 meter. However, for the joint research the length of the cycling path is not that important. What really matters is the ‘state of the art’ smart functionality that is built in and under the surface–and all of the smart sensors above ground that are pivotal for the further developing of Plastic Road, and for providing detailed insights the project provides in mobility behaviour of pedestrians and cyclists.

The BridgeXR-project—in full: Breaking Barriers for Accessible and Inclusive Journeys through eXtended Reality—tackles the accessibility challenges faced by people with disabilities throughout the travel chain. Developing AI applications for mobility

AiMTT aims to cultivate a highly skilled and diverse AI talent pool equipped to address the opportunities and challenges of AI in mobility, transport, and logistics. Flood evacuation

Flooding has become more common in the Netherlands in recent years. Therefore, southern safety regions want to be well prepared. Getting residents evacuated in a timely manner is a challenge, especially when conditions change by the hour. That is why MICD, TU Delft and Argaleo are developing an online tool to channel evacuations.

Smart and green mobility

The large-scale, European research project MetaCCAZE focuses on the use of smart and green partial mobility and logistics. The aim is to find new and useful solutions that are also financially viable.

Outdoor Mobility Digital Twin

With the new TU Delft Outdoor Mobility Digital twin (OMDt) we are able to monitor and visualize all traffic on our campus, including pedestrians and cyclists. This helps us to take measures that not only benefit road safety, but also reduce crowding. MICD brought together nine partners, TU Delft labs and external partners, to work on this innovative solution.

Deploying AI with crowd crises

MICD is collaborating with TU Delft and 24 other parties on a study into the use of AI (artificial intelligence) in crowd crises, AI Compass. Examples include excessive crowds at an event, a grim atmosphere after a football match or fleeing crowds during a calamity. The aim is to develop systems that provide reliable forecasts to prevent a crisis and, in case one does occur, provide real-time advice to the authorities. This will help minimise security risks. The research investigates the optimal cooperation between humans and AI.

Tool to analyse mobility

In many cities, a huge amount of data on traffic is collected every day. The greater the amount of data available, the more difficult it becomes to produce useful analyses. Within the European project Emeralds, useful tools are being developed for this purpose.

Converting cycling data into policy

MICD, together with TU Delft, is launching a study on the conversion of cycling data into useful policy recommendations for governments. Based on large amounts of data collected by public authorities, analysts will assess the quality of the data, which trends they observe and how these insights may form the basis for the future design of cities.
