The corona pandemic is hitting education hard: following courses and doing practical work on site is currently not possible. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) has launched several pilots to see how schools and universities can be safely reopened. MICD is taking care of one these pilots. To do that, it is taking a technology-based approach.
In the Indoor Mobility Dashboard pilot, MICD is deploying technology to help students and staff keep a safe distance in teaching buildings. Beacons, wristbands and an app will be used, among others, to accurately monitor how everyone moves around inside buildings – and where any bottlenecks lie.
This research should provide valuable insights that will be useful not only during the corona pandemic, but also in future situations where keeping a distance is necessary. MICD expects to complete the pilot by the end of 2021.

MICD will conduct research on passenger behaviour in (semi-)automated vehicles from 2022 to 2025. Therefore MICD is setting up a promising driving lab, where the test subject will appear to be participating in traffic in a self-driving car.
The Municipality of The Hague has launched the ‘Crowd Safety Manager’ project. The aim is to investigate whether models can help the municipality predict crowds in the city centre or in Scheveningen, for example. MICD is also participating in the project with a team of TU Delft researchers.
MICD has launched the Smart Mobility Hub project together with the Department of Transport & Planning in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. Our researchers want to use VR (virtual reality) to create the ideal mobility hub.
At present, we mainly detect cyclists with loops in the road or smart cameras. As a result, the picture of bicycle traffic is limited to the locations of those loops or cameras. The aim of the new Connected vehicles & smart intersections project is to supplement that picture with data from passing cars. Indeed, many modern cars are equipped with cameras and other sensors that detect and recognise fellow road users, including cyclists. Since smart cars are also capable of communicating with roadside systems, those detections can be shared with, for example, traffic lights from an intersection further down the road.
Commissioned by the Zuid6 partnership, TU Delft, Argaleo, and MICD have developed an evacuation module that can calculate and visualize evacuation scenarios. The tool has received very positive feedback; both professional journals and national newspapers reported on it in November and December 2025.
Tuesday 18 November 2025 marked the final day of the four-day AiMTT course Data, AI and Multimodal Traffic Management in Delft. More than 30 mobility professionals and PhD researchers explored how artificial intelligence and data can be applied to manage complex, multimodal traffic systems. MICD was closely involved in setting up the course.
To address challenges at the intersection of AI & Mobility, the TU Delft | AI Initiative, Mobility Innovation Centre Delft (MICD) and the Transport & Mobility Institute (TMI) brought together leading experts from science, industry and government during TU Delft’s festive Dies Natalis week “Making Sense of Mobility”. Hosted by Mondai, the AI & Mobility Day on January 17th, was about shaping the future of AI in mobility.
Designing the mobility of the future is complex, due to several factors. On the part of the European Union, the urgency to drastically reduce CO2 emissions is high. Furthermore, our cities are getting busier and the diversity in means of transport is increasing. With more sustainable choices and increasing pressure on energy supplies in mind, the question arises: how can we better spread traffic and influence travel choices?
