In January 2023, the new Horizon Europe-project Emeralds will kick off. Nineteen municipalities, universities and companies are collaborating in this to create a Mobility Analytics as a Service-tool set. TU Delft is one of the project partners, with the Transport & Planning Department of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences and MICD as executing parties.
Especially in the city, many terabytes of mobility data on cars, public transport, bicycles, air quality and so on become available every day. That is great, but that data is only useful if it can be properly processed and analysed. The aim of the new Emeralds European project is to create a toolset, Mobility Analytics as a Service (MAaaS), that will make working with data a lot easier.
Manage, analyse, visualise and more
The toolset will enable road operators and other stakeholders to collect and manage data of large size, high speed and wide variety, analyse it online and offline, import it into real time responsive AI/ML algorithms and visualise the results in interactive dashboards. All these services will respect strict European legislation, at all levels of architecture.
The toolset is planned to be developed and tested in a number of pilots. The Municipality of Utrecht and the Municipality of The Hague are two of the pilot cities.

Mobility Innovation Centre Delft is present at the Transport Research Arena (TRA) in Dublin. TRA, is the European transport event that covers all transport modes and all aspects of mobility. It is the largest European research and technology conference on transport and mobility.
A major challenge in crises is the combination of complexity, time pressure and moral decisions. AI has the potential to support crowd crises decisions, yet the increasing use of AI has led to a debate about the legal and ethical implications. To address these challenges, the AI-COMPASS consortium, led by TU Delft, develops real-time decision support systems, considering context, behaviour, and values. The project is financed by the Collaboration between Humans and (semi-)Autonomous systems programme of NWO.
This week marks the exciting start of the metaCCAZE Project, a groundbreaking initiative funded by HorizonEurope.
Traffic congestion, huge crowds, air pollution – mobility data can help solve problems of this kind. “But the more data Dutch government bodies and private parties have at their disposal, the more difficult it becomes to distil the right information from all those data sources,” says MICD director Sascha Hoogendoorn-Lanser.
A short, interesting video was created for the Emeralds project. In less than four minutes, those directly involved explain the Mobility Analytics as a Service they’re working on. Sascha Hoogendoorn of MICD is also featured in the video.
Studies rarely stand alone. The DIT4TraM project is also part of a larger cluster: 4FRONT. A handy leaflet has now also been developed for this cluster.
MICD will conduct research on passenger behaviour in (semi-)automated vehicles from 2022 to 2025. Therefore MICD is setting up a promising driving lab, where the test subject will appear to be participating in traffic in a self-driving car.
