The thousands of students, members of staff, and visitors generate a lot of traffic flows at the TU Delft Campus. MICD and her partners want to make those flows more insightful with the new Outdoor Mobility Digital twin (OMDt).
Such a digital twin is a digital representation of reality, in this case the traffic flows of cyclists, pedestrians, scooters, cars and buses. The twin will be fed with existing data sources, and new monitoring systems shall also be rolled out and tested.
The better the coverage of this data, the better our insights into traffic: when is it quiet, when is it busy, what conditions (such as weather) play a role and so on. The aim is to use good analysis for continuously improved forecasting and to make the right provisions to organise traffic smoothly and safely. It goes without saying that a lot of focus is also placed on privacy and safe data processing.

Commissioned by the Zuid6 partnership, TU Delft, Argaleo, and MICD have developed an evacuation module that can calculate and visualize evacuation scenarios. The tool has received very positive feedback; both professional journals and national newspapers reported on it in November and December 2025.
High tides have become increasingly common in the Netherlands in recent years. Therefore, we are developing an online tool to manage a safe and timely evacuation.
Mobility Innovation Centre Delft is present at the Transport Research Arena (TRA) in Dublin. TRA, is the European transport event that covers all transport modes and all aspects of mobility. It is the largest European research and technology conference on transport and mobility.
A major challenge in crises is the combination of complexity, time pressure and moral decisions. AI has the potential to support crowd crises decisions, yet the increasing use of AI has led to a debate about the legal and ethical implications. To address these challenges, the AI-COMPASS consortium, led by TU Delft, develops real-time decision support systems, considering context, behaviour, and values. The project is financed by the Collaboration between Humans and (semi-)Autonomous systems programme of NWO.
This week marks the exciting start of the metaCCAZE Project, a groundbreaking initiative funded by HorizonEurope.
Traffic congestion, huge crowds, air pollution – mobility data can help solve problems of this kind. “But the more data Dutch government bodies and private parties have at their disposal, the more difficult it becomes to distil the right information from all those data sources,” says MICD director Sascha Hoogendoorn-Lanser.
A short, interesting video was created for the Emeralds project. In less than four minutes, those directly involved explain the Mobility Analytics as a Service they’re working on. Sascha Hoogendoorn of MICD is also featured in the video.
Studies rarely stand alone. The DIT4TraM project is also part of a larger cluster: 4FRONT. A handy leaflet has now also been developed for this cluster.
